FL7 baby!

Posted by umsldragon - March 10th, 2008

Well, I finally got FL7 to work on my computer. Stupid viral threats! >,.< Anyway. Working on a song called battlefield. Dunno when it'll be up. Still trying to figure out all of the program. Anyone wish to help me with effects, greatly appreciated.

Keep it REaL,

Sure, I could share a few tips.

If you're just starting out, you'll need some good soundfonts. These are pre-recorded samples of an instrument set to different keys. The crappier ones tend to only have a few unique recordings per octave, while the rest of the keys use the same recordings except at different pitches for the different keys. So keep in mind, if the soundfont is only, like 1kbyte, then it's probably crappy. On the other hand, the really good ones can have a unique recording for every single key, plus when you hold the key down, the sound will either loop or be sustained for a long time. Another characteristic of a good soundfont is that when you release the key, it doesn't stop too abruptly, but that's a finer point.

Just type in sf2 in Google and search to get tons of sites with tons of soundfont files. For classical music, try soundfonts that are made from Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO) samples, or Philharmonia samples.

Also, I recommend getting the free, high quality percussion .wav samples offered at www.philharmonia.co.uk for free, though you have to edit out their approximately .5 second delay (I would use Audacity to edit wav/mp3 files) before you use them otherwise your beat will be off (I learned that the hard way).

Now, the way you install these files into fl7 is to simply cut and paste them into C:\ Program Files \ Image-Line \ FL Studio 7 \ Data \ Patches \ Soundfonts
And for the wav files, put them in the User folder instead of the Soundfonts folder. Good luck, and have fun!

Thanx. That was helpful. Ya, I noticed some bad soundfonts on there. I also noticed the lack of... I'm very glad you pointed that out to me. Thank you.
